Among all instant noodles, Ottogi Sesame Ramen (Chamkkae Ramyeon) has always been my favorite. Its rich, nutty, and comforting broth never fails to hit the spot.
So, imagine my surprise when I spotted Ottogi Sesame Ramen Egg Gimbap at a convenience store. Sesame Ramen... but as gimbap? Of course, I had to try it.
First Impressions – Promising and Packed
The roll looked nicely filled with egg omelet, spinach, pickled radish, carrot, and fish cake. At first glance, it seemed like a balanced and colorful mix of ingredients.
The rice itself had a light orange hue—almost as if it had been seasoned with the ramen broth. And yes, it gave off that familiar sesame-ramen aroma I love.
Flavor – Familiar but Overly Salty
The first bite was interesting. It really did taste like Sesame Ramen—that nutty, savory flavor was definitely there. But as I kept eating, the saltiness started to build up, overpowering the other ingredients like the egg and vegetables.
What began as a unique and nostalgic flavor turned a bit heavy toward the end. It felt like the strong seasoning drowned out the more delicate parts of the gimbap.
Final Thoughts
The idea of turning Ottogi’s iconic Sesame Ramen into a gimbap is clever, and the ingredients were well put together visually. However, the taste didn’t quite live up to the expectation. It’s flavorful, but too salty to enjoy a full roll on its own.
Still, it was fun to satisfy my curiosity— now I know what "Sesame Ramen in gimbap form" actually tastes like. Would I buy it again? Probably not. But it was definitely worth trying once.
