I recently ran out of tomato sauce and thought it was the perfect chance to try something new. After browsing through countless options, I landed on the Heinz Tomato Basil Pasta Sauce. Heinz is famous for its ketchup, so I was curious how their pasta sauce would compare.

Despite the word basil in the name, the basil flavor is quite subtle—just a hint in the background. If you’re expecting a sauce packed with fragrant basil, this one might fall a little short. However, the clean and classic tomato flavor really shines through, making it a versatile base for many different dishes.

I couldn’t wait to try it, so I whipped up a quick plate of pasta. As expected from Heinz, the sauce had a noticeably tangy flavor. It leans more sour than sweet, making it a better match for light, savory tomato pasta dishes.

Later that evening, I used the same sauce to make a fish cake lasagna. I layered square-shaped Korean fish cakes like lasagna sheets and added plenty of sauce between each layer. The bold tomato flavor paired surprisingly well with the vegetables and the fish cake, creating a light yet flavorful dish.

While the basil was a bit underwhelming, I found this sauce to be clean-tasting and easy to work with. It’s a solid everyday tomato sauce that can be adapted for many recipes.
