Looking for a creative way to use frozen dumplings? This tomato dumpling gratin is quick, cheesy, and incredibly satisfying. Golden pan-fried dumplings are topped with a spicy tomato sauce and melty mozzarella—proof that frozen dumplings can become something special with just a few extra steps.

Tomato Dumpling Gratin

Ingredients (Serves 1)

  • 1/2 tomato
  • 4 frozen dumplings (preferably king-size or Korean wang gyoja) 
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (about 50g)
  • 3 tbsp tomato sauce 
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • Parsley flakes for garnish 

Instructions

1. Prepare the Tomato

Roughly chop 1/2 a tomato.

2. Make the Sauce

In a small bowl, mix the chopped tomato with 3 tbsp tomato sauce, 1 tbsp hot sauce, and 1/4 tsp black pepper. Reduce or skip the hot sauce if you prefer a milder flavor.

3. Pan-Fry the Dumplings

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan over medium heat. Cook the dumplings until golden brown on all sides.

4. Assemble in a Gratin Dish

Spread the tomato sauce at the bottom of an oven-safe dish. Place the fried dumplings on top.

5. Top with Cheese & Microwave 

Generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella over the dumplings. Microwave for about 3 minutes and 30 seconds, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Sprinkle with parsley flakes and serve immediately.
