Today, I’m introducing one of Binggrae’s long-time favorites: Samanco with Rice Cake. This fish-shaped ice cream sandwich has been a beloved treat in Korea since 1991. Despite its fishy shape, don’t worry—there’s absolutely no seafood involved!
Once you open the package, you’ll find an adorable fish-shaped wafer shell filled to the brim with creamy vanilla ice cream, a layer of sweet red bean syrup, and little pieces of chewy mini rice cakes (tteok).
The combination is truly delightful: cold and creamy from the vanilla, sweet and earthy from the red beans, and satisfyingly chewy from the rice cakes. It’s a dessert that blends traditional Korean flavors with the fun of an ice cream sandwich—making it popular across all ages.
I’ve been enjoying Samanco ice cream since I was a kid, and even after all these years, it never fails to make me smile. Whether it’s the heat of summer or a quiet winter evening, that blend of cold, sweet, and chewy always feels just right.
